US98 Soccer Rag - Volume IV, Issue 3

'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, US98 Soccer Ultras!

Matchday III really saw some inspiring individual and team performances that showed the progress all participants are making!!

Some of the teams and action of note: REAL and BAYERN in U-8, both closing the gap and giving their respective opponents all they could handle; CELTIC v. BAYERN in U-10 going the distance in a 4-5 nailbiter; REAL U-13+ putting a good team performance in and showing how the offside trap can be a defenders friend in this age group; and a classic U-13+ matchup of two balanced teams when UNITED v. BAYERN went into the final quarter tied 3-3!

Yes, the understanding and skills of everyone are improving, as seen in the Match Reports below!:

REAL Against The Wind v. STANDARD de Red Bar

By STANDARD Trainer, Michelle Binkley

On Saturday, Match III was definitely a good one to watch. Andy, our game captain, started the game off by a quick point in the first quarter. Soon after was a powerful play down the field resulting in Fiona's assist to Mitch for the score. In the second quarter, although there were no points made it was still an eventful quarter. Michael had a fast break down the field, Macguire had some great shots on goal that just couldnt be made into points, and Patrick, like always was hustling with everything he did.  At halftime the score was 2-0 and much credit for that is due to the defense. Tyler, our goalie, with four saves, Mitch and Andy with four blocks each, and Fiona with two.

The second half Team Red Bar came out full force. Andy started the half again with an awesome play, assisting to Mitch for the score. Daniel took control of the ball and dribbled past three defenders and scored!! Blane, headed up a strong defense battling on many occassions with the Real players and forcing the ball down our field everytime. Patrick had three good shots right outside of goal that were not converted into points. In the fourth quarter Macguire had an excellent assist to Fiona and Daniel scored two more goals! Blane had a commanding fast break down the field. We ended the game 7-1 and it was just as exciting as always. Everyone played well and the win was definitely a reflection of every player on the Standard Team.
Our player of the game is Daniel Leuze.
GO TEAM RED BAR!!!!!

Fat Daddy's UNITED v. FC BAYERN 30-A Chiropractic

By UNITED Gaffer, Deb Shost

What an incredible match!  Henry Savioe and Dalton Shost played the games of their lives!  Wish we had it on video!  Henry, playing center defense, was all over Bayern’s center forward preventing numerous shots.  He also broke up plays which were developing on the wings.  Dalton made amazing saves as goal tender during the first and third quarters, and scored all four goals for United, 3 in the second quarter and 1 in the fourth quarter.  Olivia Garrett’s skills were called upon as she provided United with strong defense.  Matthew Brooks showed his depth as a player by playing both offense and defense.  Collin Thomas had some good hustle out on the forward line.  Aria Gaffrey, Lizzie McDuffie, and Kristin Lane all worked to hold their positions on the field.  Garrett Shost was fearless in goal during the second and fourth quarters.  Although United came up short on the scoreboard, every player can hold his/her head high and be proud of his/her performance today!

REAL Canvas v. Fat Daddy's UNITED

By REAL Gaffer, Lauren Romano

It was a tough game so I would just like to put two encouraging sentences this week.

We were proud of our kids for their continued effort to learn and grow in their soccer skills. Keep up the positive attitudes!

Cafe' Rendez-Vous CELTIC v. FC BAYERN 30-A Chiropractic

By CELTIC Gaffer, Coleen Franek

The CELTIC Bhoys & Ghirls met a talented and stubborn BAYERN team this past Saturday.

It took a determined and concentrated effort, but CELTIC managed to come out on top. #7 Jack Franek evidenced this squad's determination on the first goal, not giving up until the ball was in the back of the net. #10 Brandon Emerick assisted on this goal, making sure the ball was strategically placed for Jack's effort near post. Brandon also continued his scoring ways, adding a goal to the tally to make it 2-0 at halftime.

By this time, BAYERN had found its bearings and was pressuring CELTIC from every angle. However, #3 Findlay Townsend continues to be a defending force and specialist, and she was always in the middle of blunting any of the opposition's attacks. #5 Mereleigh Camaret, #4 Ella Gritzmacher, and #2 Elan Camaret continue to show their effectiveness helping out in the back, as well as up front. And #6 Zane McLaughlin, #8 Kate Dargavell, and #9 Jaden Joodi continue to organize the midfield and attack so well, that in the haze of passing, dribbling, and shooting, the Referee and Manager are still unsure if it was Kate or Jaden that scored the final goal for CELTIC.

But, all of the Gaffers agreed, "We probably caught this BAYERN team at the right time, because they are a force to be reckoned with!"

'Mon the CELTS!!!

CPH GALAXY v. Royal STANDARD de Red Bar

By GALAXY Gaffer, Kirby Williams

CPH Galaxy was in a very close game against Red Bar on Saturday until Ben Sirmans broke the game wide open with 3 goals in the span of about 5 minutes in the 3rd quarter.  Calum Aronson, Mac Williams and Dylan Nemecek each added one goal to give the Galaxy a 6-1 victory.  Alex Halatsis and Thomas Simms played very well at the sweeper position and Jay Borick again showed signs of jedi knighthood at the defensive position with several last second sliding saves to keep the ball out of our goal.  All players contributed to the victory over a good Red Bar team.  Coaches and parents continue to be very proud of each of the players as they gave 100% effort the entire game and showed tremendous teamwork in passing the ball.  Most, if not all, of the goals scored by CPH Galaxy were a result of an assist from a selfless teammate.  Well done, Galaxy!

In other news:

  1. The Jason Thompson Charity Golf Tournament: The charity golf tournament for Jason Thompson is just one week away.  It's not too late to register.  Let's show our support for Jason.  The tournament will be a scramble which means all four team members hit the ball and then select the best shot.  Three people pick their balls up and bring them to the spot of the best shot.  Then everyone hits from that location.  So, you don't have to have a great shot.  Your team will help you out.  We're taking handicaps into consideration so anyone can win.  Please consider signing up for the tournament.  Pass this email onto everyone you can.  This is a great opportunity to raise some money to help Jason out. Tournament will take place at Windswept Dunes in Freeport.  There will be a shotgun start at 9:00.  $70 per person which includes lunch.  Prizes for the top 3 teams as well as longest drive on a few holes and closest to the pin on a few holes.  If you have any questions, please contact Deb or Brandin Shost  835-1777 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . To learn more about Jason, check out www.kickingitforjason.com. This should be a GREAT event for a GREAT cause!!
  2. Helen McCall Park: We head back to Helen McCall Park this Saturday, and our Fields General, Brian Maas, is trying to work with the county Parks & Rec to ensure that the fields are not as wet as last time (sprinklers were on all night before our matches). Please contact Brian, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , to help him in relaying to the county information about the fields at Helen McCall. Also, if you need lights out at the fields during the week, please contact Brian to ensure they are on for your use.
  3. Soccer Academie INTER98: US98 Soccer has an academy program, Soccer Academie INTER98, for those Players who are interested in pushing themselves and developing in a more concentrated and immersion-style soccer offering from December 2009 through May 2010. After two seasons of offering our Academie in the recreational off-season, the demand is here now for a full-time Academie, with possible expansion of age divisions from U-10 to U-18. Tryouts will be either Wednesday October 28th and/or Wednesday November 4th, from 4:30-6:30. More information on this exciting expansion of the next level of soccer for Greater South Walton is soon coming your way!
  4. World Cup: Our United States Men's National Team was lucky to grab all 3 points against Honduras this past Saturday and book their spot in the World Cup in South Africa this summer! That shouldn't stop you from watching them or many other teams in final World Cup Qualifier action this Wednesday. USA takes on the "'Ticos" of Costa Rica, with Costa Rica's chances hanging in the balance. Also, many of the World of Football's more well-known names, like Portugal, Sweden, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Croatia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Nigeria still need results (and in some cases more help and luck from others) this Wednesday to ensure in many cases just an opportunity to participate in a play-off to see who goes to South Africa for the World Cup. It is only every 4 years, so you can bet each match will be played on a razor's edge!!  (And it is not too early to get excited and start the chatter about US98 Soccer's Spring 2010 World Cup Season. Qualified teams from around the world will be represented by us, here in little ol' Greater South Walton, Florida. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about the world of football, the world in general, and it will of course be a blast!!!)
  5. Cravings Cottage and Supporter's Shield: As mentioned in a previously forwarded article, there really is not much beyond water that any child needs while out playing soccer (or any sport for that matter). However, we do have some nutritionally-thoughtful and reasonably-priced items available in our concessions, Cravings Cottage, if so needed by Player (most likely after their match) or Fans. Plus, we have new "US98 Soccer Supporter's Shield" stickers for sale! Since we don't sell just anything to your kids and you to eat at Cravings Cottage, these stickers help us out a little with fundraising. Stop by and get one or two (or three or four, if you have that many cars), and show your pride, spirit, and support!!
  6. Pictures: After several seasons of mixed results on assigned picture takers, and the advent of pretty darn good digital cameras, we will not have a formal photographer for this season. A few seasons back my son's team did them theirselves before a match, and they turned out well without any complaints. Whether your team chooses a professional or to do it yourself, we are confident that each team can figure out the best way to handle photos. Finally, speaking of digital photos, please do not hesitate to send us your pictures from each Matchday, so we can highlight the events and fun of each Super Saturday!

Looks like PERFECT weather on the horizon for this upcoming Matchday IV! Everyone keep on learning and having fun!!

Cheers & See You Out On The Pitch!
